LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued notices to the ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanullah on a contempt petition filed by Advocate Azahar Siddiqui.
The notices were served on the petition that sought a strict action against the said persons as they “commit contempt of court during their speeches in Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Jaranwala rally on January 27”.
The petition added that Pakistan Electronic Media Regulation Authority (PEMRA) allowed the speeches to run on the tv channels, hence action should be taken against it.
The court directed the parties to submit their response on the petition.
It also directed the petitioner to present evidence of his claim in the next hearing on February 14 .
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has already accepted for hearing a contempt of court petition against ousted premier Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz.
The petition accused the former premier and his daughter of spreading hatred about the courts following the supreme court’s (SC) verdict in the Panama Paper case that had disqualified Nawaz.
It pointed out that both the father and daughter passed anti-judiciary remarks during their speeches at the Kot Momin rally and Punjab House.
The PEMRA was also been made a party in the case along with other respondents.
The petition also stated that Nawaz had committed contempt of court during a speech in Lahore on August 25, 2017
A contempt of court case must be filed against Nawaz and Maryam, it pleaded.
It is not the first time Nawaz is being accused of passing anti-judiciary statements. In December last year, the IHC had admitted a similar contempt petition against him.
