Appearing before a three-member Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, Justice Umar Ata Bandial and Justice Ijazul Ahsan, Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf Ali stated that the Law and Justice Ministry had submitted a summary to the president for the appointment of Justice (r) Syed Asghar Haider as NAB’s prosecutor general and a notification would be issued soon. The court then disposed of the suo motu case.
Meanwhile, during the day, the Law Ministry issued the notification. The appointment has ended an impasse between the NAB and the federal government, which had led the Supreme Court to take notice of the delay in the appointment of the NAB Prosecutor General. Syed Asghra Haider, a retired judge of the Lahore High Court, was among five nominees recommended for the slot of NAB’s Prosecutor General by the NAB chairman Justice (r) Javed Iqbal, the Law Ministry as well as Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
