Toronto: A 29-year-old Sikh has been arrested on charges of killing his wife and mother-in-law early on Friday in Brampton area of Ontario.
According to Peel Region Police, Dalwinder Singh was arrested from the crime scene and is under investigation. The accused has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder.
Const Rachel Gibbs, spokesperson for Peel police, said officers were called to a home on Starhill Crescent to check on the premises. The home is in the area of Dixie Road and Sandalwood Parkway E.
When officers entered the home, they found two bodies inside with obvious signs of trauma, she said on Saturday. Paramedics pronounced both women dead at the scene after suffering from stab wounds, Gibbs said. The victims are identified as Baljit Thandi (30), and her mother Avtar Kaur (60).
Gibbs said a child was located in the house but was not injured. The child is currently in the care of the Children’s Aid Society. She said 29-year-old husband of Thandi was arrested on the scene. Police have identified him as Dalwinder Singh. Police in a tweet said this is believed to be an isolated incident and there is no risk to the public. The homicide division has taken over the investigation, it said.
In a separate incident, Peel Region Police were alerted to a report of a stabbing on Marmac Cres around 1am and found another woman with fatal injuries. There were four occupants at the residence where the stabbing took place.
“There were two children in the home. One sustained minor injuries and they’re both being taken care of by hospital staff,” said a police constable. It was unclear whether the child’s injuries were also stab wounds, he said.
“This is a domestic related incident, so obviously the family members that were present at the time will be interviewed”, he said.
Around 10am on Saturday, the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) invoked their mandate, and Peel Region Police can no longer comment on the investigation, the constable said. The SIU investigates incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injuries or allegations of sexual assault.
