ISLAMABAD: A petition has on Friday been filed in Supreme Court (SC) to block the by-election in Lodhran NA-154. The petitioner, named Shahid, says Article 224 of constitution disallowed holding election within last 120 days of the completion of assembly tenure, reported Daily Times.
The petitioner claims that Election Commission of Pakistan has set the date for Lodhran by-election on February 2 while National Assembly will complete its tenure on May 31.
The petition further stated that Islamabad High Court had spent 15 days in hearing the stay order and then reserved the decision. It prayed that the election should be stopped in order to save public money.
NA-154 had been vacated after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen had been disqualified by SC in its December 15 verdict, declaring him dishonest under Article 62(1)(f) of Pakistan’s constitution on multiple charges. Jahangir Tareen has filed a review petition against the disqualification today.
