Sir: Recently a very shameful incident took place in Sukkur. A 16-year-old girl was almost married by her parents to a 50 year old man. It is highly unfortunate that a child’s own parents would subject her to this kind of cruelty.

The marriage of underage girls has severe, negative consequences on their psychological and reproductive health. The government must take action in this regard by arresting the parents of those girls who attempt to get them married as children as well as the adult grooms. Furthermore, awareness campaigns are also needed to highlight the importance of waiting for adulthood until marriage.
