US suspends security assistance to Pakistan

WASHINGTON: The United States (US) has on Thursday suspended the security assistance to Pakistan as State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert confirmed in a press briefing that the security assistance to Pakistan had been suspended.

She added that the security assistance to Pakistan would only be restored if the country took decisive action against the Haqqani Network.

The suspension targets Coalition Support Fund that Pakistan receives for its fight against the terrorism in the country.

It had been reported last night that the Trump administration had been mulling a suspension of the security assistance to Pakistan in the wake of President Donald Trump’s tweet in which he had openly accused Pakistan of given the US nothing but ‘lies and deception’ in return for US funds.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif had categorically denied US allegations, saying that the funds US had provided could be audited any time. He further stated that Pakistan had fought two wars for the US during the last four decades and more than 70,000 Pakistanis had laid down their lives in the war against terror.
