The prettiest streets in Britain have been revealed with winding cobblestones proving a hit with the public. The top 15 streets up and down the country have been named, according to a survey of 1,000 people across the UK.
In first place is The Shambles, a 14th century market road in York. Previously the site of a bustling meat market until the nineteenth century, today the quaint street is framed by overhanging timbers dating back some 700 years.
In second place is The Royal Mile in Edinburgh’s Old Town, the oldest part of Scotland’s capital city which still retains some of its medieval layout.
The Georgian Circus in Bath was voted into third place, with its sweeping uniform facade proving popular with visitors.
Tudor-style architecture also features heavily on the list, which boasts clocks, monuments, churches and a host of buildings with character.
The survey was carried out by National Express.
Spokesman Chris Hardy said the company compiled the list in a bid to encourage people to explore more.
He said, “We quizzed the nation, scouring the A to Z of Britain’s roads, rows, avenues and lanes to uncover the top 15 UK streets you need to see. A long Bank Holiday weekend is right up everybody’s street so we thought the time was ripe to reveal the UK’s prettiest to inspire people to take somewhere new in their stride this Easter.”
