MML seeks suspension of political parties’ registration

LAHORE: Milli Muslim League (MML) submitted a petition on Thursday, seeking the suspension of registration of political parties that violated the provisions of Election Act 2017.

In the petition submitted to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), MML said that under the recently enacted Elections Act 2017, political parties were required to submit Rs 200, 000 as registration fee along with a list of 2,000 members and their National Identity Cards (NIC).

Advocate Rizwan Abbasi submitted the petition on behalf of Haq Nawaz Ghumman, the party’s spokesperson.

MML said in the petition that since none of the political parties submitted the documents and the fee by the deadline, their registration should be suspended. MML also asked for the lawmakers who belong to those political parties to be de-notified because the suspension of the registration of their respective political parties would also lead to them losing their seats.

Previously, when MML tried to contest the NA-120 by-poll, its request for registration was rejected by ECP, citing its links with Jamaatud Dawa, a banned militant outfit. ECP’s decision was also challenged by MML in Islamabad High Court (IHC).
