KARACHI: While addressing to a press conference on Wednesday, the chairman of the Muhajir Quami Movement (MQM), Afaque Ahmed has said that Rangers have played a vital role in restoration of law and order situation in Karachi and their special powers must be extended.

He said that citizens of the metropolis are also breathing peacefully and are satisfied with the performance of Rangers as it has brought back peace in the city.

He said that since the police had failed to control the growing riots and worsening Law and Order situation in Sindh, rangers were given special power to bring the lost peace in the province in late 1989.”If the police would not have been politicized , the situation would have totally changed”, he said adding that there must be recruitment in the police on merit basis and they must be given professional trainings.

He said that Rangers must be given authority to maintain law and order situation in the city till the proper training of police and to end the sense of insecurity of the citizens.

The judiciary of the country must also be considered superior to conduct law and order in the country. “If we ignore judicial system, people will take law in their own hands and we shall keep on seeing incidents like Masshal”, he said.

Some legislation must be developed to present criminals before the court for their accountability rather than to hide them at unknown places.” People must also know about the system”.

To a question regarding the decision of the Supreme Court about the Panamagate scandal he said that many bigwigs have done investment with Prime Minister, therefore he said that the decision seems to come in favor of the Premier.

To another question regarding the detention of Uzair Baloch, he said that those people who have been alleged to have been involved with the intelligence agencies of other countries including Raw must be punished according to the law.

To another question, he said that the mayor of the city must be given its due powers and authority for the development of the city.
