Panama Case: Supreme Court directs formation of JIT to probe allegations against PM Nawaz

ISLAMABAD: The top court has constituted a six-member Joint Investigation Team to probe the allegations leveled against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif regarding the acquisition of London flats through corruption.

The top court directed the prime minister and his children to appear before the JIT when they are summoned.

The JIT comprises of senior officers of Federal Investigation Agency, representatives of National Accountability Bureau, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, Inter-Services Intelligence and Military Intelligence.

The top court held that the heads of these institutions shall submit the names within 7 days before the top court.

The top court directed that the JIT submit its progress report periodically after two weeks and the final report shall be submitted in 60 days before a new bench, constituted by the chief justice.

The new bench shall issue the order after the JIT report.

The two members of the bench Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and Justice Gulzar in their dissenting notes stated that since prime minister has failed to substantiate the money trail for mills and properties, thus the prime minister is liable to be disqualified.

The judgment was passed by a majority of 3-2. The verdict of 3 judges shall prevail wherein the constitution of JIT is directed.

Before the announcement of the judgment, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, heading the five-member larger bench, thanked the attendants of the hearing for maintaining the dignity of the court.

He however expected from the attendants of court room no 1 to maintain the dignity of court no matter what they felt about the judgment.
