LAHORE: The night sky is expected to light up as Germinid meteor shower begins at midnight on Wednesday.

This event will be visible in all parts of the world where the spectators will be able to witness meteors shooting through the night. Germinid meteor shower will begin at midnight on Wednesday and will continue till Thursday morning.

Geminid meteor shower is not caused by a comet but an asteroid named 3200 Phaethon. Meteor showers that are caused by this celestial object are named Geminids because their radiant is in the constellation of Gemini.

When Phaethon’s surface is damaged, due to its low gravity, the pressure from the sunlight blows off dusty grains from the object into the space. When the Earth crosses their trail, they burn up in the atmosphere and appear as shooting stars.
