LAHORE: Pakistan will start issuing e-passports from March 2018, said Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal on Wednesday.

Earlier, Passports and Immigration Director General Usman Bajwa signed the contract with a representative of private French company Gemalto.

Former interior minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan approved e-passports last year.

E-passports will first be available for diplomats and the citizens would be issued e-passports from June 2018.

E-passports contain a chip that contains the traveller’s biometric details which can be used to authenticate him.
