LAHORE: Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Mehmoodur Rashid has said that the opposition parties will not allow the joint investigation team (JIT) – as announced by the Supreme Court to probe corruption allegations against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif – to work until he (PM) resigns from the office.

He also filed a resolution in the Notice Branch of the Punjab Assembly against the prime minister on Friday. The resolution has been filed on the directives of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan.

In the resolution, he said that the two senior most judges of the Supreme Court had given decision against the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif saying that he (PM) was not more trustworthy and honest.

He said it was necessary for the premier to step down for an unbiased probe by the JIT into the corruption allegations against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Later, talking to media persons at the Assembly Secretariat, the opposition leader demanded the prime the prime minister tender to tender resignation from the office. “Otherwise, we will not allow the JIT to start an investigation,” he said.

To a question, he said that they had started working on constitution of a ‘grand alliance’ of opposition parties in Punjab against the ruling Sharif.

He said that a grand alliance would be formed within next couple of days, and finally it (grand alliance in Punjab) would be announced next week.

It is pertinent to mention here that Punjab Governor Rafiq Rajwana has summoned a session of the Punjab Assembly on April 24, and the opposition benches are likely to ramp up pressure on the speaker to take up the resolution against the prime minister.

On the other hand, parliamentary sources told Daily Times that the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) is also going to move a resolution in favour of the premier.
