Sir: As a Pakistani girl it hurts me immensely that Pakistan has been designated the second worst place in the world for women. In Pakistan thousands of girls and women suffer because of discrimination. Women’s rights are violated based on gender every day in the spheres of law, politics, society, economy and culture.

According to the World Economic Forums worldwide gender gap report of last year, Pakistan ranked 143 out of 144 countries. However, this discrimination in Pakistan is due to lack of education and other unequal opportunities. In Pakistan 75 percent of women in the work force have no formal education.

Only 32 percent have intermediate or higher education. And according to Muhbad-ul-haq human development report on women in Pakistan observe that women on average earn 35.6 percent less than men, with pay inequality. Even both have done the same work. This gender difference is driven by employer’s tendency to believe that men are better than women. Women are treated unfairly rather than to see the productively differences. This gender gap which is created by most of our countrymen may hamper the development of our country, economically, culturally and politically.

Gender discrimination must be eradicated from thoughts and action as soon as possible and women and girls should have equal rights.
