Olympiakos escape with fine but title celebrations on hold

ATHENS: Olympiakos were fined 150,000 euros ($180,000) and ordered to play four home matches behind closed doors by the Greek federation Tuesday for violence during this month’s 2-1 home Cup semi-final first-leg loss to AEK Athens. It was the lowest possible penalty for the Piraeus club which feared having up to six points docked – a punishment that could have resulted in Olympiakos losing this season’s Greek league title. With one remaining match this weekend and a six-point lead over second-placed PAOK Thessaloniki, had Olympiakos received the full punishment and PAOK matched their rivals’ result in the final game, then PAOK would win the championship with a better head-to-head record. On Sunday, Olympiakos looked to have won their 44th league title with a 5-0 victory at home to Giannina but will have to wait until judicial matters are settled. A final decision on whether they will be declared champions may need an additional two weeks as the sports prosecutor may also file an appeal against the federation’s decision. PAOK have said they will appeal the decision insisting that Olympiakos be docked points, but it is unlikely that they will win. Olympiakos confirmed they will appeal the fine and matches behind closed doors which will be carried over into next season.
