Smugglers of donkey hides arrested

KARACHI: The Police has busted a group involved in smuggling of Donkey hides to China by arresting a Chinese Couple and their 5 local Assistants on Wednesday from Gulistan Juhar Block 12 and recovered 4 Thousand 786 Donkey Skins worth up to Rs 110 Million in International Market.

Police has registered a case and started investigations to unearth the whole group are underway.

In the initial investigation the accused who belonged to china, has confessed that demand for hides, used to make traditional medicine ejiao, who’s price has risen so is the price and rate of slaughter of donkeys in China.

According to Police a team of PS Shahra-iFaisal on the intelligence tip off on Wednesday raided a Shop situated in Glulistan Juhar Block 12 and recovered 4786 Hides of Donkeys and arrested a Chinese accused namely TU-ZHONG-XIAO and his Female partner along with their local facilitators including Afshan, Ehtesham, Daniyal, Muhammad Jumman, Muhammad Fazal and Zeeshan.

“We have registered a case against the culprits and initiated investigations against them, said Asrar Afridi SHO Shahra-i-Faisal. The Police will proceeded further to apprehend the whole network of these criminals.

On the other hand an officer of Sindh Wiled Life Department Adnan told Daily Times that five countries have banned exports of donkey hide to China including Pakistan, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso and as these Species have become in danger because of this Trade and Smuggling.

He further said that Thousands of donkeys in the developing countries are being killed and their skins are being sold to China for its use in traditional medicine, reveals a report published today by the Donkey Sanctuary.

Demand for donkey hide, which is boiled to produce gelatin, the key ingredient in a medicine called ejiao has raised the price and the rate of slaughter of the animals, threatening the livelihoods of poor communities who rely on their existence.
