ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) on Friday demanded Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s resignation following the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s Panamagate verdict.
“If the PM does not resign, then the lawyers will launch an anti-government campaign from May 12,” IHCBA President Arif Chaudhry said while addressing a press conference.
He said that the SC decision had raised questions on the character of the PM. “There is a clear cut question mark on money trail presented by the PM’s children. Now, we have only one demand that the PM should resign and present himself before the joint investigation team (JIT),” he said.
“A delegation of the IHCBA had wanted to meet the PM. However, the bar no longer wants to hold the meeting following the SC decision. We only want the rule of law to prevail. We have no political agenda,” he said.
Chaudhry said that state institutions were being defamed. “The IHCBA will not show any flexibility against the government and will never back out of its demands,” he said.
A convention will be convened by the IHCBA on May 12 in which all leaders of political parties will be invited, he said.
