Rift between Sindh govt and Pakistan Railways over construction of bridge at Malir

KARACHI: Sindh government’s project for building second portion of overhead bridge at Malir-15 has remained in doldrums since 2013. This is due to the rift over the land issue between Pakistan Railway and Sindh government.

The Railway is claiming money from Sindh government on the pretext that portion of the ramp is being built over the main railway track,

Niaz Soomro, Special Secretary Development Local Government Department (LGD) Sindh informed.

“We are trying to remove this snag and negotiations are underway between the parties and hopefully we would able to find a viable solution”,
he opined.

On February 8, 2016, the first of the two ramps Malir-15 flyover has been finally opened for traffic but the second was still under conflict.

Due to this stoppage in construction work, the motorists and foreign business people visiting industrial sites are facing immense traffic jams.

Both sides of main road starting from Malir Kalaboard (Nehal Hospital) to Pak Steel flyover (Quaidabad), including Malir Court and Malir Bridge are jammed with vehicular traffic,

QamarQureshi, President Economic Forum Pakistan was of the view that non-construction of long-proposed second portion has created ditches of various sizes causing continuous traffic problems, particularly at rush hours. The condition worsens when it rains.

The Pakistan Peoples Party has always claimed the vote bank of Malir but has failed to develop this agrarian district of Karachi division. Owing to stoppage of construction work, commuters have been facing serious problems on both tracks of the National Highway for the last several months.

The Rs 996 million project is witnessing escalation day by day as construction should have been completed by December last year.
