Former IG Jamali, others likely to be indicted on May 6 in corruption case

KARACHI: An accountability court is expected to indict former inspector general of police Ghulam Haider Jamali and other senior police officers in a corruption reference on May 06.

The Former IG, then the AIG finance Fida Hussain Shah and training DIG Sahab Mazhar and others are facing charges of misusing their authority and making illegal appointments.

The judge ordered the provision of the copy of the NAB reference to the accused persons and put off the hearing till May 06.

The National Accountability Bureau had filed the reference against Jamali, Fida Hussain, then Sindh Reserve Police head Aitezaz Ahmed, then SSP retired Captain Ghulam Azfar Mahesar, then SP of Matiari district Amjad Ahmed Shaikh, SP Khalid Mustafa Korai and others.

It was alleged that the above-mentioned police officers misused their authority and circumvented the required procedure to make illegal appointments in the Sindh police and the Sindh Reserve Police in particular, causing a loss of over Rs50 millions to the coffers.

The NAB had carried out the investigation in the light of the report of a three-member fact finding committee which was appointed by the Supreme Court to investigate irregularities in the recruitments in the Sindh police.

Meanwhile, the same court adjourned the hearing of a corruption case against former petroleum minister Dr Asim Hussain till May 06.

After hearing arguments from defense and prosecution sides over merits of the corruption reference, the judge put off the hearing.

Dr Asim is facing corruption charges for allegedly depriving the public exchequer of Rs 462 million by misusing his authority to get land allotted illegally, encroaching upon the state land for expansion of Dr Ziauddin Hospital, money laundering and receiving kickbacks.

The PPP leader is also facing another reference for illegally awarding multi-billion gas processing contracts to Jamshoro Joint Venture Limited and thus causing a loss of Rs 17 billion to the national exchequer.

According to the reference, the accused allowed the JJVL to process gas at different gas fields without conducting an open auction, signing agreements and memorandums of understanding as required by law, thus causing a loss of Rs 17.4 billion to the national exchequer.

Other accused included SSGC managing director Khalid Rehman and former officials Zuhair Siddiqui, Azeem Iqbal, Shoaib Warsi, Yusuf Jamil Ansari and Malik Usman, OGDCL former managing director Basharat Mirza and official, Zahid Bakhtiar and JJVL chief executive officer, Iqbal Z Ahmed.
