‘Technical hands never remain unemployed’

LAHORE: Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA) Chairperson Irfan Qaiser Sheikh has said that only a short training course of three months can help an unskilled labourer earn twice the minimum wage rate of Rs 14,000 per month In his message in on the Labour Day, the TEVTA head honcho said that skilled labour could play a key role in socio-economic development of Pakistan. Irfan Qaiser acknowledged the struggles and efforts of labourers of Chicago, in which hundreds of labourers lost their lives against the US government discrimination on May 1, 1886. He said that getting skilled education was very important for the youth because technical hands never remain unemployed. “Youth should get skilled education to reduce unemployment in Pakistan,” he said. He said that the TEVTA was working for provision of training courses to unskilled people of Punjab, and added that short courses of three and six months were being provided in 44 different programmes, which are directly related to labourers. “We should stop assuming that working class refers to hard-working, blue-collar and low-wage workers,” he maintained. He said that the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) sector could revolutionise socio-economic landscape in Pakistan. He reiterated that the authority TEVTA could play its role in the national development process by providing trained workforce for local industry and also for export to the global set-up.
