SC admits bail cancellation plea in Benazir Bhutto murder case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday admitted for hearing a plea seeking cancellation of bail granted to two senior police officers in the Benazir Bhutto murder case.

A two-member SC bench, comprising Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and Justice Maqbool Baqir, after hearing Sardar Latif Khan Khosa, senior counsel for the petitioner, held that the legality of the objections raised by the Registrar Office on the plea would be examined first. The court also observed that although the petitioner was not a party before the Islamabad High Court in the case, its legal aspects would also be examined. Latif Khosa contended before the court that his client was a party to the case before the high court. He contended that the law was completely ignored while granting bail to the accused police officers. The plea was filed by Rasheeda Bibi, the mother of Tauqeer Kaira, chief security officer of Benazir Bhutto, who was also killed along with Benazir Bhutto in the Liaqat Bagh Rawalpindi bomb blast in 2007.

The petition, earlier rejected by the Supreme Court Registrar on technical grounds, stated that senior police officers CPO Saud Aziz and SP Khurram Shahzad were granted bails and posted at key positions, despite being prime accused in the case, which was against the law and norms of justice. Both the police officers are accused of washing the crime scene through fire tenders. They were sentenced to 17-years incarceration by the anti-terrorism court. However, they were granted bail by the Islamabad High Court.
