KARACHI: Sindh Minister of Education and Literary Jam Mahtab Dahar has claimed that education system in Sindh is better than those of other provinces of the country.

He made these remarks while addressing the launching ceremony of the ‘Guide and Toolkit’ under the public-private partnership (PPP) here on Tuesday.

United States Agency for International Development (USAID) acting Deputy Mission Director for Sindh and Balochistan Oghale Oddo and Sindh Minister of Education and Literary Jam Mahtab Dahar launched the toolkit, along with Sindh Education Secretary Dr Iqbal Durrani, USAID Office of Education Deputy Director Erica Rounsefell, Dr Randy Hatfield, senior policy adviser for USAID Sindh Basis Education Programme and other distinguished guests.

The toolkit has been developed by School Education and Literacy Department of the Sindh government with the assistance of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Sindh Basic Education Programme (SBEP).

Talking to the media, the minister said that 50 fully equipped schools would be handed over to the private sector – two schools from every district (one primary and one secondary). He said that a survey of 4,500 schools had been completed and until June 2008 all facilities would be ensured there.

Moreover, the minister thanked the USAID for its continued assistance to improve quality of education in the province.

Acting Deputy Mission Director Oghale Oddo said, “We are proud to have partnered with the government of Sindh for improvement of education. The USAID is helping to improve the quality of teaching and increase access to safe learning opportunities for children, especially girls.”

Sindh Education Secretary Dr Iqbal Durrani said that the government had elaborated a legal framework under which schools constructed under the USAID-SBEP had been handed over to private organisations in order to improve operations of public schools under the education management organisation (EMO) policy.
