ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday challenged in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) a decision by the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) to ban election rallies.
On behalf of PTI Chief Imran Khan, Naeemul Haq filed the petition against ECP notifications through Dr Babar Awan Advocate.
The petitioner has requested the court to nullify all three notifications issued by ECP against holding public meetings and rallies. “All political parties have a right to hold political rallies and public meetings as enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan. The ECP notifications are based on malafide intentions. They are a clear violation of basic human rights as only opposition parties are being barred from holding public rallies,” the petition stated. Talking to the media, Babar Awan said that the ECP did not prevent government ministers and chief ministers from holding public meetings. “This is a sheer violation of Article 199 of the Constitution,” he said.
