HYDERABAD: A girl, Asma Soomro, who works with an NGO Hands in its Mithi office was abused, humiliated by NGO officials and arrested by Mithi police. She was kept in lock up for many hours until the citizens gathered outside the police station and chanted slogans against the police and the NGO. She was abused and humiliated by both NGO officials and police during her lock up for many hours. The only crime of Asma was that she had demanded payment of salary being denied to her for last few months. When the citizens found out about the arrest of a female worker, they reached the police station and raised slogans against the police and NGO officials. The police finding no way out produced her before a court alleging her of mental disorder on the behest of the NGO officers. Members of civil society were infuriated over the incident of arrest and humiliation of a female worker and have demanded stern action against Mithi police who acted only to appease the NGO.
