SAHIWAL – Police on Sunday claimed to have arrested an alleged suspect named Waseem from Mandi Banauddin, who denied any involvement with the latest Karachi ‘knife attacks’ according to his initial investigation.
Sources claim that 27-year-old, Waseem was on the run and hiding in his hometown of Chichawatni, Sahiwal district to avoid an arrest.
Suspect Waseem told media,” that he has never been to Karachi and holds no animosity against women”.
But police sources hold that Waseem had been apprehended previously with similar nature of the crime that involved attacking a woman in Sahiwal, so his statement is not believable at this point until a thorough investigation is completed.
Deputy Inspector General East (DIG) Sultan Khawaja said that Waseem is among all other suspects, a prime suspect due to the similar nature of his previous crime with the ongoing knife attacks in Karachi.
The suspect is likely to be shifted to Karachi until completion of further investigation is done, especially forensic analysis of his personal data.
It is reported that the first attack on a woman in Karachi happened on Sept 25 and the last such reported incident occurred on October 5th.
A total of 13 women have been attacked according to official reports filed at different police stations in Karachi with a majority of such incidents happening primarily within a five-kilometer area of Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Karachi.
