MITHI: A computer engineering graduate from Lohana Hindu community of Mithi Town Thar, Kiran Sadhwani, was employed as a trainee engineer at Thar Coal Project.

Sadhwani is the first ever woman graduate from her community. She completed a 4-year computer degree from the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET).

She was selected for the job out of 25 candidates during an arduous eight-month long recruitment process.

She expressed her views that there were opportunities for women in the engineering field and her passion to become an engineer had materialised. She said that she was always interested in technological advancement and automation engineering.

“I want to learn as much as I can during my work at the mining site”, she added.

She expressed her gratitude to Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) for giving her an opportunity to serve in the field of engineering. Engineering is a lucrative field and more women must pursue education in engineering, she said. She also said that her father who runs a grocery store was initially reluctant to let her work but then came around to the idea of her working and contributing to the society.

SECMC spokesperson Mohsin Babbar said that women from Thar were serving the company in various roles, from working as truck drivers to engineers. The organisation is in favour to promote working women in order to uplift their families’ economic conditions, he concluded.
