Whenever Donald Trump speaks, his words become a global conversation. Now when he is a US president in waiting, his recent call for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine has become a talk worth consideration. By urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to act, Trump has dragged himself into the heart of a conflict which he has always opposed.
He will inherit this as president when becomes a resident of Oval House in January. His message, delivered through social media and an NBC interview, suggests he is walking a delicate line, which is not a usual Trump act.
On the surface, Trump’s plea appears pragmatic – he wants to end the nearly three-year war to save countless lives and resources. His approach, including hints at reducing military aid to Ukraine and possibly pulling the US out of NATO, may be welcomed in one part of the world and raise alarms somewhere. Peace lovers would support Trump’s moves while US allies in Europe and national security experts in Washington may be hesitant to support these moves.
Trump had a vague response when asked if he had spoken to Putin. His unwillingness to confirm or deny direct talks with the Russian leader adds mystery and also fuels speculation about the methods he might employ. Trump mostly does not mince words. His statement “I don’t want to do anything that could impede negotiation” is both cautious as well as evasive.
While Putin remains mum, Zelenskyy’s restrained reaction reflects the tightrope Ukraine must walk. The interview did not touch on other foreign issues, such as the Gaza ceasefire, China and Taiwan. In Pakistan, people might be expecting a word on Imran Khan or Kashmir. Trump’s pre-inaugural interviews might be aimed at showcasing his plans. While peace is a noble goal, Trump’s rhetoric could either pave the way for resolution or deepen divides. *
