The deadlock over the Champions Trophy is a test of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) resolve. Time is running out as less than three months are to go, while host Pakistan and India remain at odds over arrangements. The ICC being the supreme body of the sport cannot afford to let this linger any longer. It must step in decisively.
Pakistan is the designated host and it has made concessions. Its ‘partnership formula’ provides a middle ground which allows India to play matches at a neutral venue while the remaining tournament matches stay in Pakistan. In exchange, Pakistan will also not play in India in future tournaments hosted by India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) rejected even this compromise.
The ICC must remember that cricket is larger than Indian demands. If the ICC stands by India’s rigid stance, the ICC will undermine its authority. Pakistan’s position as host remains strong. Security assurances have been provided, and all other member boards have agreed to the arrangements. Political differences should not be allowed to hijack the game.
India’s refusal to tour Pakistan sets a dangerous precedent. If the ICC tolerates such conduct, it opens the door for other countries to play politics. This will damage international cricket’s cohesion. Rules must apply equally. If India fails to fulfil its obligations, it should face penalties. The ICC has mechanisms to enforce compliance, including financial sanctions and exclusion from future tournaments.
If the ICC keeps lingering on the issue, broadcasters may walk out. They are asking for schedules to be finalised. A delayed decision damages the credibility of the Champions Trophy and the ICC itself. Time is running out, and the ICC’s inaction emboldens defiance.
Pakistani and Indian cricket fans deserve fair matches. The ICC must act now to resolve this impasse. It is not just about the Champions Trophy; it is about the integrity of the sport. *
