Surging Terrorism

Author: Daily Times

Sunday did not pass without leaving behind a line of terror. The day saw two incidents of terrorism which only highlights the persistent threat faced by the nation. The Pakistan Army and police forces successfully thwarted attacks, but the losses underline the heavy cost of security efforts.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, two soldiers, including Captain Muhammad Zohaib Ud Din, embraced martyrdom during operations against militants. The military’s media wing reported that eight terrorists were killed in two intelligence-based operations between November 29 and December 1.

The first operation in Bannu’s Baka Khel area resulted in the elimination of five militants and injuries to nine others. Sepoy Iftikhar Hussain, 29, sacrificed his life while fighting gallantly.

In another operation in Shagai, Khyber District, security forces neutralised three militants and arrested two. Captain Zohaib, leading his team from the front, fought bravely but lost his life during the exchange of fire.

While security forces remain resolute, the growing threat from reorganised militant groups demands urgent and robust counter-terrorism strategies. The sacrifices of Pakistan’s soldiers and police underscore the ongoing battle to ensure peace.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the security forces’ efforts and paid tribute to the martyrs. They reaffirmed their resolve to eradicate terrorism from the country.

Meanwhile, a separate attack targeted the Chapri Police Station in Mianwali. Over 20 heavily armed terrorists launched the assault with rocket launchers and grenades.

Police repelled the attack, killing four terrorists after an intense gunfight. Two officers sustained injuries, while the remaining attackers fled. Search operations are ongoing to apprehend the fugitives.

Punjab Police Inspector General Usman Anwar commended the police for their swift response. Heavy contingents were deployed to secure the area.

These incidents come amidst rising violence in Pakistan. According to the Center for Research and Security Studies, terrorist violence and counter-terror operations saw a 90% surge in the third quarter of 2024. Most fatalities occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, marking the highest figures in a decade. *
