Reports suggest that the Planning Department of Data Ganj Bakhsh Town is openly violating regulations, allowing unlawful modifications and demolitions of historic buildings. Allegations have surfaced against Zonal Officer Planning (ZOP) Mehwish Naeem and field staff, who reportedly approved unauthorized constructions and facilitated the transformation of iconic landmarks for commercial purposes.
Prominent Violations
1. Hafiz Juice Corner
The administration of Hafiz Juice Corner constructed a four-story plaza on a historic site, encroaching upon a service road. Allegations of bribery during the construction process have emerged, with employees of Data Ganj Bakhsh Town accused of overseeing and enabling the project.
2. Ghulam Rasool Building
The famed Ghulam Rasool Building, previously home to a renowned bookstore, has been demolished. In its place, a shoe market named Chashman Shoes was established. Another portion of the same building was razed to make way for a restaurant by Dollar East Exchange. Despite local government inquiries, no concrete action has been taken.
3. Kifayat Market
Known as Tayabba Center, Kifayat Market was partially demolished and reconstructed without authorization. Deputy CEO Muhammad Jameel eventually sealed the site, but political influence is reportedly being used to reopen it.
4. Bashir Sons
Following the pattern, Bashir Sons began illegal construction under the guise of alterations. Their building was sealed after public complaints, but efforts to overturn the decision are underway.
Negligence and Corruption
Under existing regulations, any modification to structures on Mall Road requires approval from a committee established by the Punjab Chief Secretary and Governor. However, ZOP Mehwish Naeem and building inspectors have been accused of bypassing these protocols. Currently, five to six illegal construction projects are ongoing, with no active measures.
