Donald Trump’s victory as the President of the United States has raised numerous new questions regarding political, economic, and social dynamics worldwide. This success has impacted global relations and has also been felt by developing countries like Pakistan.
In the past, Trump’s initial relationship with Pakistan was not favourable. However, it underwent a dramatic shift following the meeting between Imran Khan and Trump. As before, Trump’s victory has posed new challenges for countries globally in terms of foreign policies, trade agreements, and security concerns. Similarly, it has deeply affected Pakistan’s foreign policy, economy, and security situation.
In the past, Trump’s rise to power marked significant changes in US foreign policy. Trump adopted an aggressive stance towards Afghanistan and South Asia, often criticizing Pakistan. He accused Pakistan of allegedly supporting terrorists and threatened to suspend U.S. aid, which created tension between the two nations. However, these relations later saw a surprising transformation.
During his presidency, Trump sought to stabilize the US economy by imposing higher taxes on imports and promoting his “America First” policy, affecting global trade. In his recent campaign, he once again prioritized economic issues, which played a significant role in his re-election. Now that Trump has been re-elected, discussions have begun about the implications of his victory.
Pakistan’s leadership needs to strengthen relations with major powers other than the US to handle any unexpected situations.
Questions arise about what his return to power means, the challenges it may pose for the U.S. and the world, and the policies he will implement. Trump’s initial moves indicate that his controversial policies from his first term will likely return.
For instance, during his first tenure, Trump had a stringent immigration policy. He proposed building a wall along the Mexican border to curb illegal immigration and demanded funding for it. He has reiterated his commitment to taking strict measures this time as well in his winning speech. This is likely to impact immigrants from South American countries significantly, increasing challenges for migrants already residing in the US.
In his first term, Trump emphasized reducing taxes and boosting domestic industries to strengthen the US economy. This time, he has stated that he plans to continue his past policies and introduce additional measures to promote business in the US and create employment opportunities. However, his economic policies may exacerbate trade tensions between the US and China, potentially affecting the global economy.
Trump’s foreign policy in the past largely adhered to the principle of “America First.” He often criticized international organizations like NATO and the United Nations for the US’s financial contributions. During his recent campaign, Trump reiterated that if re-elected, he would demand that other countries contribute as much as the US to NATO. Otherwise, the US might withdraw from the alliance. Trump’s appointment of a former TV host as his Defense Chief signals his readiness to make unexpected decisions. Additionally, he is likely to maintain his tough stance on countries like China and Iran. His approach towards ongoing tensions with China, sanctions on Iran, and relations with Russia may become more intense, as his foreign policy is predominantly focused on American interests.
Following Trump’s victory, Pakistan must innovate and strategize its foreign policy more effectively. Pakistan’s leadership needs to strengthen relations with major powers other than the US to handle any unexpected situations. Trump’s win also underscores the need for Pakistan to maintain balance in its domestic policies and foreign relations to sustain stability in its ties with the US.
