Punjab government’s much-anticipated sports gala has been postponed due to heavy smog blanketing Lahore, as per instructions from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb announced the decision, emphasizing the government’s commitment to public safety during the ongoing smog season. In a statement, Maryam Aurangzeb shared that the gala will be rescheduled once the smog situation improves. She also highlighted the government’s proactive response to the environmental hazard, which includes a campaign to distribute masks among Lahore’s residents and advisory announcements encouraging citizens to limit outdoor activities. Additionally, the Punjab government has intensified action against individuals involved in arson incidents contributing to the smog. Fifteen FIRs have been registered, and fines totaling over 400,000 rupees have been imposed on those found responsible for starting fires at multiple locations. Authorities reported that initial claims of fires at 28 sites were found to be baseless, underscoring the efforts to prevent misinformation and address genuine environmental concerns.
