Arrest of retired army officials Pakistan’s internal matter: Pentagon

The US Department of Defense has described the arrest of former military personnel in Pakistan as an internal matter for the country.

Pentagon spokesman Major General Patrick Ryder underscored the strong partnership between the US and Pakistan, affirming that the US remains committed to supporting Pakistan in achieving regional stability and mutual goals.

He said the arrest of the former military personnel as an “internal matter” for Pakistan. In response to inquiries about the recent arrests, Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said “I just don’t have anything for you on that. That’s really a Pakistani internal matter for them to speak to. As you know, the US values our partnership with Pakistan and engage with both military and civilian leaders based on mutual interests.”

The comments from the US follow recent announcements from Pakistan’s military media wing regarding the detention of Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed, former head of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Hameed faces allegations of corruption and misuse of authority, and is currently undergoing court-martial proceedings.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has also revealed the detention of three additional retired military officers in connection with the case against Hameed. This action follows a Supreme Court order and an inquiry initiated to address allegations dating back to May 2017, as part of a broader military investigation aimed at maintaining national stability.
