Nawaz resumes GT Road power show

RAWALPINDI: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to resume his journey from Islamabad to Lahore via Grand Trunk (GT) Road at around 11am on Thursday.

After beginning his political voyage on Wednesday, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief was unable to cover enough distance due to large gatherings of party faithful, forcing the former premier to spend the night at Punjab House.

The former premier was ousted by Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan on July 28 with added references filed against Sharif family, after which he decided to take matters into public court to prove his innocence.

“The judges said there is no corruption case against Nawaz Sharif, so why was I disqualified? I leave this for history to determine. If you do not protect your rights, they will continue to be snatched away from you,” he said while addressing the rally.

According to sources, Nawaz will leave his temporary residence at 11am, while supporters from across the city have started to gather near Kacheri Chowk, to continue their march towards Punjab’s provincial capital.

Pertaining to the rally’s unhurried pace on Wednesday and crowded roads, it is yet unclear whether Nawaz will be able to reach Lahore today, sources said.

Meanwhile, tight security preparations have been made along GT Road, with the deployment of plain-clothed policemen as well as elite force commandos.
