LHC to take up contempt plea against Nawaz today

Author: Staff Report

LAHORE: Justice Mamoon Rashid Sheikh of the Lahore High Court (LHC) will take up today a contempt petition against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif over his alleged speeches against judges of the Supreme Court during his rally from Islamabad to Lahore.

Amina Malik of the Civil Society Network filed the petition before the LHC. Petitioner’s counsel Azhar Sidduqe advocate had on Friday filed the petition before the LHC requesting it to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the former prime minister for making speeches against judges of the Supreme Court who disqualified him in Panama Papers’ case.

The petitioner stated that the apex court had declared Nawaz Sharif disqualified from being elected as member of parliament. He stated that Nawaz Sharif had been making mockery of the top court judges in his speeches during his four-day homecoming rally from Islamabad to Lahore.

He stated that former prime minister’s speeches against judges amount to contempt of court and a revolt against the constitution. He stated in the petition that the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) was also backing Nawaz Sharif due to which his ‘contemptuous’ speeches were continuously being telecast on the electronic media.

The petitioner requested the court to initiate contempt proceedings against the deposed prime minister under Article 402 of the constitution. He also requested that the PEMRA should be directed to impose ban on telecasting Nawaz Sharif’ speeches against the apex court judges.
