MADRID: Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta will miss second leg of Spanish Super Cup against Real Madrid on Thursday (1am PST) at Santiago Bernabeu after suffering a muscle sprain.

Iniesta did not take part in Barcelona’s training session on Tuesday due to a thigh injury and will not travel with the team to Madrid. Midfielder Andre Gomes, who returns from injury, will travel with the team instead.

The Spanish national’s injury proves a major blow as the club looks to turn the tie around after a 3-1 loss at Camp Nou in first leg on Monday.

Defender Thomas Vermaelen and forward Rafinha will also miss the trip to Bernabeu due to injuries, whereas Arda Turan, Douglas, Sergi Samper and Munir El Haddadi have all been left out of the squad too.

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo will also miss the game after being sent off at Camp Nou and eventually being handed a five-match ban for pushing one of the match officials.
