Shaheen Afridi to replace Babar Azam as Test captain

After the defeat in the T20 World Cup, it has been decided not to appoint Babar Azam as captain for the Test format. Reports indicate that the Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to relieve Babar Azam of the captaincy for the upcoming home series against Bangladesh, which includes 2 Tests. This decision comes after Babar Azam’s inconsistent performance as captain in the ICC T20 World Cup.

Chairman PCB, Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, had earlier entrusted Babar Azam with the leadership of the T20 team until the 2025 Champions Trophy, replacing Shahid Afridi based on the recommendation of a seven-member selection committee. It was expected that Babar Azam would lead in the upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh, which is part of the ICC Test Championship.

However, following his poor performance in the World Cup, the board has decided not to consider Babar Azam for the Test team captaincy and instead placed their trust in Shaheen Afridi. It’s worth noting that former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie will be the coach of the Pakistan team in Test format.
