SC hints at forming commission to probe PTI foreign funding

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday hinted at forming a commission under the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to determine whether the foreign funds of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) were acquired through prohibited sources.

The court directed Anwar Mansoor Khan, counsel for PTI, to submit his reply regarding party’s stance if the matter pertaining to foreign funding was referred to the ECP for determination and issuance of the court’s final verdict in the light of commission’s findings.

The court sought party’s reply after hearing the arguments of PTI’s counsel over maintainability of petition filed by PML-N leader Hanif Abbasi.

The Wednesday’s hearing was resumed with the annoyance of Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar over media talks by PML-N members attempting to malign the judiciary with the allegation of treatment of their case with discrimination.

When the proceeding resumed, the CJP gave a good dressing down to PMLN’s Danyal Aziz and Hanif Abbasi.

“What discrimination is being done? Where Hanif Abbasi and Danyal Aziz are?” the CJP asked soon after arriving in the courtroom.

On the bench’s call, Abbasi came to the rostrum followed by Danyal with shivering nerves.

Taking a U-turn, Abbasi said that they were commenting over the case adjudicated before the ECP.

However the CJP snubbed and wrathfully admonished both politicians and saud, “Don’t malign the institutions (judiciary), these are your institutions and you are required to further strengthen it.”

“We want to make it clear to everyone that we are not going to tolerate contemptuous behaviour anymore. We barred media talk in the premises of Supreme Court building and this is last warning thereafter we will completely ban the media talk on court proceedings. We will interpret that up to what extent your right of expressions will be,” the CJP further scolded them.

Both tendered unconditional apologies.
