LAHORE: A contempt plea was filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) against ousted premier Nawaz Sharif on Monday. Mehmood Akhtar, a local resident, filed the petition.

The petition stated that the ousted prime minister in his address to members of PML-N lawyers wing on August 26 had criticised the Supreme Court of Pakistan judgement in the Panama Papers case. The petition said that Nawaz Sharif’s impugned speech was tantamount to undermining the dignity and honour of the court. He requested the court to initiate contempt proceedings against Nawaz Sharif. Earlier on a similar contempt petition, Justice Mamoon Rashid Sheikh on August 24 had ordered the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to ensure enforcement of its rules and media code conduct and ensure stoppage of contemptuous speeches against courts and judges. The court had also sought a reply from the PEMRA chairman until September 12.
