ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Bar Council (PBC), the lawyers’ apex regulatory body, on Thursday appealed to the legal fraternity of the country to observe Black Day today (Friday) against the May 12, 2007 killings.

PBC Vice-Chairman Muhammad Ahsan Bhoon and Executive Committee Chairman Hafeezur Rehman requested the members of the bar as well as members of the civil society for observing a nation-wide Black Day today (Friday). According to the PBC vice chairman, all bar associations throughout the country would hold protest meetings in their respective areas to condemn the May 12 killings in Karachi. He paid tribute to the lawyers’ movement and said that the legal fraternity had high hopes that the lawyers movement launched for restoration of judges of superior courts would result in alleviation of their problems through efficient and much improved system of dispensing justice. “However, we were greatly disappointed as the movement did not yield desired results because of political pursuits of the then chief justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry,” he said. He said that the lawyers would hoist black flags at offices of their respective bar associations and would also hold protest meetings to strongly condemn the instigative conduct of the government for failing to stop the incident.
