NAYPYIDAW: A spokesman for MS Suu Kyi stated “the state councilor will not attend” the General Assembly, where she spoke last year and gave no further details as criticism continues to grow against the Rakhine operations.

At least 370,000 Rohingya Muslims have crossed the border to the Bangladesh side since violence in Rakhine state rose last month.

Suu Kyi is currently facing allegations from the West that she has failed in speaking out against the ongoing violence.

Myanmar’s military has stated that it is only fighting Rohingya militants and no civilians are being targeted in the operations.

Ms Suu Kyi was expected to take part in discussions at the United Nations General Assembly session that begings from September 19 and ends on September 25.

In her first address to the General Assembly as National leader, Suu Kyi had defended her government’s efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis.

On Tuesday, Myanmar denounced suggestions made by the UN high commissioner for human rights Zeid Raad al-Hussein that the treatment meted out to the Rohingya Muslims was part of “ethnical cleansing.”

The UN is schedule to discuss the ongoing Rohingya crisis when it meets on Wednesday.
