Gujranwala: A meeting was held to review security arrangements for Muharram on Sunday, where Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Amir Jaan and City Police Officer (CPO) Ashfaq Khan stated that fool proof security arrangements had been made to keep the peace during the holy month.
473 processions and 1679 majalis will be held in the district, which will be provided security by 5000 police officers. The Deputy Commissioner requested that the heads of the city’s municipal departments do their part to ensure a smooth Muharram and sort out issues like cleanliness and lights on procession routes before the holy month kicks off.
The Deputy Commissioner expressed confidence that the cooperation of the Pakistan Army, police, parliamentarians and civil society will lead to a peaceful Muharram.
Meanwhile, Khan addressed a meeting in his office which was attended by senior police officers and members of the ulema. The CPO stated that 20 special elite teams will patrol the city during Ashura.
Regarding security arrangements for processions and majalis, he said those participating in the religious gatherings will be checked in walkthrough gates and by metal detectors.
He informed the meeting’s attendees that procession routes and streets on which Imam Bargahs are located would be closed to routine traffic. He stressed that the Ulema had a vital role in ensuring peace during Muharram.
Biker killed in traffic collision: A man identified as Noman died when he collided with a car while on his motorcycle.
The police said that they were informed by witnesses that Noman was riding his motorcycle when he was hit by a speeding car. He was being shifted to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries on the way. Police have started investigations into the matter.
