NAB halts five inquiries against Nawaz, family in graft cases

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has halted the inquiries against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family in five corruption cases including the Sharif Trust case, Express News reported.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the country’s top graft watchdog on January 1. Inquiries into Punjab Safe City Authority, Social Action Programme, Park Enclave and other cases have also been stopped.

The approval for the investigation into the Sharif Trust case was granted on March 31, 2000. The case alleged that the Sharif family had created anonymous properties in the name of the trust, utilised funds from the trust accounts without proper auditing, and engaged in financial misconduct.

Additionally, the Sharif family faced accusations of secretly accumulating millions of rupees under the trust’s name.

Subsequently, the bureau terminated the investigation under Section 31-B of the National Accountability Act, 2022, as amended by the Shehbaz Sharif-led Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led government. The amended law gives the NAB chairman authority to close the inquiries started under any other law.
