Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa on Thursday raised serious concerns about preferential hiring policies that prioritise the children of government employees.
A three-member bench headed by CJP Isa heard the case related to recruitment in the General Post Office Islamabad
During the proceedings of the case, the top judge expressed his skepticism about the Prime Minister’s authority to unilaterally change policies and questioned the rationale behind charitable policies that give jobs to the offspring of government employees on a preferential basis.
He urged officials to take a stand against these policies, stating, “Take courage and write to the Prime Minister that this policy is wrong; why only the children of government employees are given jobs on a preferential basis?”
In response to the inquiry, Chief Justice Isa questioned whether the remaining children in the country are not Pakistani, highlighting the need for fair and equal opportunities for all citizens.
The Additional Attorney General informed the court that the policy in question was implemented during the previous government’s tenure, to which Chief Justice Isa emphasized that no government is above the constitution.
“The previous government was above the Constitution,” Chief Justice Isa remarked, calling for the immediate abolition of such policies.
The Additional Attorney General requested time to seek instructions from the government on the matter, prompting the court to summon the Attorney General for further clarification. The CJP insisted that policies favoring the children of government employees should be reevaluated and eliminated, emphasising the supremacy of the constitution in all matters.
