On Monday, the Senate of Pakistan came together to endorse a resolution, put forth by Behramand Tangi of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), advocating stringent legal measures against individuals engaged in negative propaganda against the nation’s armed forces. Originally proposing a 10-year disqualification from public office for those found guilty of such acts, this penalty was later retracted after a clarification from a senator.
The resolution expressed deep apprehension regarding the proliferation of negative and malicious propaganda targeting the armed forces and security agencies on various social media platforms. It underscored the immense sacrifices made by the armed forces and other security agencies in the relentless war against terror and for safeguarding the nation’s borders. The resolution recognized the indispensable role of a strong military and security apparatus, particularly given the challenging geopolitical context.
“The Senate of Pakistan, therefore, recommends that the government takes necessary steps to award severe punishment as per law for all those found involved in negative and malicious propaganda against the armed forces and other security agencies of Pakistan,” reads the resolution. The Senate is scheduled to reconvene on Tuesday.
Senators participating in the discussions emphasized the legitimacy of concerns related to enforced disappearances, urging a careful and considerate approach to address these issues. They stressed the importance of the government attentively addressing the demands of the protesting Baloch people and taking effective measures for their redressal in the pursuit of enduring peace and stability.
