Bone marrow transplant

Author: Daily Times

Sir: It is quite commendable as well as appreciable to note that the Children’s Hospital in Lahore — whose capacity has only recently doubled — has become the first public sector hospital, not only in Punjab, but in the whole country to have carried out bone marrow transplantation creating history.

According to reports, bone marrow transplantation has successfully been carried out on two children, aged two and four years old, for whom their elder sisters had donated the bone marrow. Both the children after transplantation are reported to be stable and under constant care of the doctors. They will remain in an infection free atmosphere for seven to eight weeks at least. It is good to know that all this was made possible due to the personal interest Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif took in this case. He has made it evident that he is committed to ensure the provision of the most modern healthcare facilities to people and this the latest example of such facilities.

Furthermore, it is also noteworthy that the Children’s Hospital has also become a centre of excellence with the start of a training programme in bone marrow transplantation for the doctors, nurses and para-medical staff so that such a facility can also be provided in other public sector hospitals of the province such as Nishtar Hospital in Multan and BVH Hospital in Bahawalpur in due course of time.

All the doctors, nurses and medical staff involved in successfully carrying out bone marrow transplantation deserve a ‘welldone’ from everyone throughout the province, besides the chief minister and the parents of little patients. The doctors have done a commendable work and now all of us should pray for the early recovery of the little patients who have undergone the first-ever bone marrow transplantation at the Children’s Hospital Lahore.
