LAHORE: A summary for introducing e-challan system in the city is pending with the Law Department for approval for the last four months.
According to sources, the City Traffic Police (CTP) is constantly trying to get the summary approved by the Law Department but it is still waiting for the green signal to go ahead.
“Owing to the delay in approval of the summary, the equipment worth millions of rupees purchased to introduce the system could be damaged or destroyed,” they said.
They said that road users would be taken into account after calculating the number of penalty points and the driving licences would also be suspended.
A senior CTP officer, requesting anonymity, told Daily Times that once approved the new system would enable the CTP to handle traffic flow in a better way.
He, however, said that the government and the department concerned were not taking the issue seriously.
He said that senior CTP officials were trying their best to contact with the Law Department for the approval of the summary and hoped that the summary would be approved soon.
Under the new system, an electronic device would calculate these points and issue violation tickets. Every violation will have certain point penalties and authorities can cancel a driving licence from three months to two years.
On violations amounting to 20 points in the first year, a driver will be stopped from taking the wheel and his/her licence will be cancelled for three months.
During the second year, the violator will be banned from driving a vehicle and the licence will be cancelled for six months on violations of up to 16 points.
In the third year, the licence will be cancelled for one year and a ban on driving will be imposed on violations of up to 12 points.
During the fourth year, licences will be cancelled and a ban on driving imposed for one year in violations up to 10 points. Also the violator will have to attend traffic classes before applying for the new licence.
