TAIZHOU: At least 11 people died when a blaze engulfed two houses early Monday in an eastern China city, the government said.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight in Yuhuan, a county-level city of Taizhou in eastern China’s Zhejiang province.

Two other people were said to be hospitalised and 10 more people sustained minor injuries.

According to the Yuhuan government, the fire broke out at 0:13am local time and was brought under control at 1:50am.

The two neighbouring buildings, situated on Changxing Road in the Xiaoshuibu Village, were both four and a half storeys tall.

The fire burnt an area of 380 square metres (4,090 square feet).

Social media footage shows local residents gathering to film the fire on their mobile phones as they expressed shock.

The Yuhuan authority dispatched 13 fire engines and 50 firefighters to put out the fire, said the government statement.

Government officials were also said to arrive at the scene immediately to direct the rescue efforts.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
