In a significant development that emerged on Friday, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Istehkaam Pakistan Party (IPP) have reached an understanding on seat adjustments ahead of the general elections scheduled to be held on February 8, sources said on Friday.
Insiders said that a meeting between IPP patron-in-chief and PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif was held at the latter’s residence in Lahore’s Model Town. Rana Sanaullah and Ayaz Sadiq also participated from PML-N’s side while Aun Chaudhry represented IPP. They said that while a fundamental agreement on seat adjustments has been achieved, further rounds of discussions among party leaders will determine the exact number of seats where adjustments might take place. According to sources, seat adjustment was possible in various regions, including Lahore, Sahiwal, Lodhran, and Rahim Yar Khan, among others.
The development comes in the wake of another seat adjustment understanding between Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and PML-N. The understanding was reached during a meeting between PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif. The rendezvous, which lasted for approximately 40 minutes without any media interaction, leading to rumours of PML-Q eyeing about ten national and a dozen provincial seats from the PML-N.
However, the rumours were promptly dispelled by Shujaat’s son, Shafay Hussain, who clarified an existing agreement between the parties, revealing that an understanding rested upon four National Assembly and eight provincial assembly seats. He further clarified that the primary intent of the visit by PML-N leaders was to inquire about the veteran politician’s health.
