SEPCO ‘overcharging’ consumers

Author: By Our Correspondent

KHAIRPUR: Sukkur Electric Power Company Limited (SEPCO) officials in Khairpur are costing the government millions, said a number of enraged consumers. The consumers alleged that several SEPCO officials were involved in illegal activities, such as overcharging consumers and inflated meter readings. The consumers are paying SEPCO bills on time but it is not assisting the consumers in the adjustment of their wrongly inflated power bills, said one consumer. SEPCO in Khairpur had been wrongly issuing detection bills of Rs 12,000-Rs 18,000 to customers who use air conditioners on properly installed power meters. The customers are then asked for a bribe when they seek to get the bills adjusted, said one consumer. The consumers alleged that around 300,000-500,000 kilowatts of power was being stolen in Khairpur by SEPCO officials including meters readers, line men, line superintendents, revenue staff and other officials.
